As rumors about Gatsby’s life begin to rise, a reporter comes his mansion hoping to interview him and get the real story. Now, there is an interruption in the story made by Nick. He begins to recount Gatsby’s history, not as it is rumored, but as it truly occurred. Gatsby was born by the name of James Gatz on a North Dakota farm, and though he attended college at St. Olaf’s in Minnesota, he dropped out after two weeks because he could no longer pay his tuition. One summer while working on Lake Ontario, Gatsby saw a yacht owned by Dan Cody, a very wealthy man, and rowed out to warn in about the incoming storm. Mr. Cody, very thankful, gave this young boy the name Jay Gatsby and took him onto his yacht as his personal assistant. They traveled all around the world and Gatsby eventually learned of Mr. Cody’s bad drinking addiction. This is where Gatsby decided against drinking. Mr. Cody left Gatsby $25,000 when he died, but Cody’s mistress prevented him from claiming it. From here on out, Gatsby is dedicated to becoming a wealthy man.
Nick does not see Gatsby or Daisy for many weeks following their reunion. One day when Nick stops by the mansion of Jay, he is surprised to find Tom Buchanan there. Gatsby invites both Tom and the Sloan’s to stay for dinner, they decline, and out of common courtesy, they invite Gatsby to dinner, and he accepts. Although Tom is becoming very suspicious of the whole situation, he has not yet found out about the love and connection between Gatsby and Daisy.
The following weekend, Tom and Daisy go to a party at Gatsby’s mansion. Although he has no interest in the party, Tom is not comfortable allowing Daisy to go alone—rightfully so. Many people seemed to be unhappy at this party, compared to other parties that Gatsby typically throws. After Tom and Daisy leave the party, Gatsby finds Nick and expresses how upset he is that Daisy did not have a good time. He continues on to say that he wants things between him and Daisy to go back to how they used to be and that he wants her to leave Tom so they can be together. Gatsby believes that his money can accomplish anything he wants it to. It seems that Gatsby had been dreaming about Daisy for such a long time and now that he has her, his dream is over.
