The only people to actually attend the funeral are Nick, “Owl Eyes”, a few servants, and Gatsby’s father! His name is Henry C. Gatz and he has traveled all the way from Minnesota to be in attendance. Henry Gatz is very proud of his son and takes and saves a picture of his house. He also tells Nick stories of Gatsby’s early life, showing him a book where Gatsby had written himself a schedule for self-improvement.
Sick of the East, Nick decides to move back to the Midwest. He breaks up with Jordan who suddenly admits she has become engaged to another man. Before leaving, Nick runs into Tom in New York City. Tom admits that he is the one that told Wilson that Gatsby owned the car that killed Myrtle and says that Gatsby deserved to die. Nick comes to the conclusion that Tom and Daisy are destructive people that do not care about the people that they hurt, and that because they are rich, they feel as though they can do anything.
On his last night in West Egg before leaving for the Midwest, Nick walks over to Gatsby’s empty mansion and erases a bad word that was written on the front steps. Nick goes out on to the beach behind Gatsby’s house. He lay down and looks up at the sky. He wonders what it must have been like for the explorers when they discovered land with no civilization at all. He makes the comparison of America being a goal for explorers just as Daisy was a goal for Gatsby. He ponders the American dream , in which people desire to move forward in the world, into a place in which their dreams are realized. The book ends.
Two years after Gatsby’s death, Nick describes the events involving the funeral. There were tons of reporters, journalists, gossipers etc. Wild, untrue, exaggerated stories exploded about Gatsby and his life; also about his relationship with Myrtle and Wilson. Nick attempts to throw a large funeral for Gatsby but all of his friends have either disappeared, like Nick and Daisy who abruptly moved away, or refuse to come, like Meyer Wolfshiem.
