Consumed by his “love” for Daisy, Gatsby called off all of his parties which he had planned for that weekend. He also fired all of his servants in order to prevent any rumors or gossip, and replaced them with shady man that worked with Meyer Wolfshiem. On what is described as the hottest day of the summer, Nick makes his way to East Egg to have lunch with Tom and Daisy. When he arrives he finds that Gatsby and Jordan are also there. A nurse brings in Daisy’s baby and Gatsby is in complete shock—as if he cannot believe that it is real. During this somewhat awkward afternoon, Gatsby and Daisy cannot hide their passionate love for each other, and they eventually decide to go into New York City together. When Tom hears about this, he says that they should all go into the city together. On the way, in two separate cars, they stop for gas at Wilson’s garage. Nick, Tom, and Jordan learn that Wilson has discovered his wife is cheating, but does not know with whom. He plans to move her out West. Doctor T.J. Eckleburg is reintroduced to the story.
In New York, it becomes extremely hot and the group gets out of the heat at the Plaza Hotel. Now things start heating up. Tom initiates his plan of attacking Gatsby. He accuses him of never attending Oxford. Gatsby clarifies that he did attend the school in an army program following the war. Tom asks about Gatsby plan for Daisy and Gatsby says that Daisy loves him, not her husband. Tom claims that him and his wife have a history that no one else could possibly understand. Then Tom accuses Gatsby of running a bootlegging operation. As Daisy observes this altercation, she becomes more and more attracted to her husband, Tom. With confidence, Tom sends Daisy back to Long Island with just Gatsby, in order to prove that Gatsby is not a threat. Randomly, Nick realizes that it is his 30th birthday.
Driving back to Long Island, Nick, Tom, and Jordan discover a frightening scene on the border of the valley of ashes. Someone has been hit by a car. Michaelis, who is a Greek man who runs the restaurant next to Wilson’s garage, tells the group that Myrtle was the victim of the accident. She was hit by a car coming back from the city, and then the car sped away. Nick realizes that it is very likely that the car that hit Myrtle was Gatsby and Daisy coming home. Back at Tom’s house, Nick finds that Jay Gatsby is hiding in the bushes. Gatsby says he has been waiting there just to make sure that Tom did not hurt Daisy. He tells Nick that Daisy was actually driving when they hit Myrtle, nut that he is planning to take the blame. Now, Gatsby asks Nick to go in and check on Daisy. When Nick goes inside, he finds Tom and Daisy eating and they have reconciled their differences and Nick leaves Gatsby alone in the night.
