When Nick wakes up, he goes to Gatsby’s mansion to see him. Gatsby tells Nick that he waited all night at Daisy’s house and nothing happened; Tom did not try to hurt her and she did not leave. Nick suggests that Gatsby should just drop everything, including Daisy, and leave the island. Gatsby begins describing his experiences with Daisy when they were growing up, and how he lied to her about his past to make it seem as though he was worthy of her. Gatsby’s gardener interrupts to say that he is going to drain the pool, as autumn was just around the corner. Gatsby tells the man to wait a day because he has never swam in the pool and would like to. Caught up talking to Gatsby, Nick realizes that he is very late for work and so he leaves.
When Nick goes to work, he is much too distracted to work and even declines a date with Jordan Baker. Nick begins describing what had happened at the garage after Myrtle was hit by Daisy. George Wilson, who knew of Myrtle’s secret lover, knew that whoever was driving the car must have been Myrtle’s lover. Eventually, Wilson ends up at Gatsby’s mansion where he finds Gatsby lying in the pool. Wilson shoots Gatsby and then shoots himself. Nick hurries back to West Egg and finds Gatsby floating in the pool, dead. He begins thinking about how lonely he must have been without Daisy.
